Types of Addiction Studies Degrees

Associate

To qualify for an associate degree in addiction counseling, you need to first be admitted into a college offering this degree. You may also have to contact the department for approval (usually just a formality). Your state board for certification may dictate that the program be equal to a major in addiction studies if you wish to be certified. Check your state-specific requirements before enrollment.

Examples of associate-level courses in addiction studies are:

  • Introduction to Substance Abuse Counseling
  • Victim/Survivor Services
  • Theories of Counseling
  • Statistics in Social Science Research
  • Research Methods in Psychology
  • Introduction to Social Work
  • Women and Addiction

Bachelor’s

Your admission into a bachelor’s degree program will require a high school diploma or GED, as well as your SAT or ACT scores. Once accepted, it takes four years on average to earn a bachelor's degree, depending on the number of classes you take and whether or not you are attending full or part-time.

At this level, you can expect to take courses like:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis of Addiction and Substance Abuse
  • Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling
  • Intergroup Relations
  • Principles of Addictions Counseling
  • Study of Drug/Alcohol Use and Addiction
  • Substance Abuse Internship/Practicum

Master’s

For admittance into a master’s degree program in addiction counseling, a bachelor's degree is required, usually in a related field like counseling or psychology. If you hold a bachelor's in an unrelated field, you may have to complete prerequisites or have additional training before approval for the master's program. Having a GPA of 3.0 or above is also a common requirement. You may also need GRE minimum test scores to be accepted.

Master’s courses can include:

  • Advanced Co-Occurring Disorders & Addictions Counseling
  • Biological Factors of Addiction
  • Crisis & Trauma Counseling
  • Leadership in Agency Settings
  • Psychopharmacology for Addiction Counselors
  • Recovery and Relapse
  • Techniques of Counseling & Psychotherapy

Certificates

In the addiction counseling field, certificates are a good option for those who want a shorter program or already have a degree and are looking to complete additional training. For undergraduate certificates, a bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite. For graduate certificates, a master’s degree is necessary.

Certificates typically take 15 to 20 credit hours to complete. They tend to cover 3 to 5 courses, although some certificates can be longer.

Some certificate titles are:

  • Certification in Drug and Alcohol Counseling
  • Addiction and Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate
  • Addiction Therapist Certification
  • Addictions Counselor Certification
  • Substance Abuse Certification

What Can You Do with a Substance Abuse Counseling Degree?

When you earn a substance abuse counseling degree, you’ll have given yourself the key to providing necessary services to others. You will be able to work with individuals, families, and groups in private practice or through outpatient addiction programs, mental health facilities, community centers, prisons, and drug courts.

Jobs in this field are full-time positions in most instances. Due to the nature of chemical dependence and the fact that many clients will be in crisis, you may work varying hours outside of a typical Monday through Friday 9 to 5 schedule. Nights and weekends may also be frequently required.
